Home Improvement Costs PDF  | Print |  E-mail
You want your home to look like a castle; but you're working with a cottage budget.  There are ways to be money wise and complete the home improvement projects you want and need.

If you're itching to liven up the structure or decor of your home, but you're just not sure that you can afford the home improvement costs, you may be in luck.

There are several ways to improve your home while staying within your budget.

Do It Yourself

If you want to cut down on your overall home improvement costs, find jobs that you can do yourself.  You can easily find tasks that you can complete, without paying a professional $30 per hour.  Invest in a good quality home repair encyclopedia, or search online to find many excellent home improvement websites.  Begin with small jobs, and increase the size of the task as your proficiency increases.  This alone will cut your home improvement costs by half, or even more.

Time It Right

Finding great bargains on materials is all about timing.  If you plan on building a new deck in the spring, take advantage of fall clearance sales to save a bundle on materials.   You can get a great deal, and store the materials until it's time to build.  Fewer people are building decks as winter approaches, so you can bet that prices are much lower in October than they are in April.  It seems that everything is on sale in December, so if your holiday budget allows, go ahead and buy the materials you need.  Memorial Day and Labor Day sales can also bring big bargains.  By paying a little attention to what's on sale, you can greatly reduce your home improvement costs.

Make a Budget

While this sounds simple, the fact is that many people make a budget, but not everyone stays within it.  By having a plan in place and setting a budget that you are willing and able to stick with, you can easily control your home improvement costs.  Base your budget on what you need, rather than what you want.  Don't live beyond your means.  You can choose a laminate counter top that looks as good as granite for a few hundred dollars, rather than forking out several thousand for the real deal.  Set a dollar amount and stay within your budget.  Shop around to get what you want.  You'll have a better looking home, and a fatter bank account.

Home improvements do not have to be expensive, and you don't need to spend your entire savings or go into debt simply to complete your projects.  With planning, smart shopping and a little elbow grease, it's actually quite easy to reduce your home improvement costs.  Make a plan, stick with it, and create the home you've always wanted.
